Football
- Nothing says Fall like tailgating and football season. If you’ll be out there on the field make sure you’ve got the right footwear. Football shoes or cleats can be chosen by the position you play or by the types of fields you’ll be playing on.
Position:
Football shoes generally come in three styles: high-top, mid-cut and low-cut.
- High-top shoes are great for linemen because they provide full support for explosive lateral movements.
- Mid-cut shoes generally work well for the majority of players, especially skill positions like defensive back, running back, wide receiver (see below) and quarterback. You can juke and jive but you’ve got some support too.
- Low-cut shoes are the lightest, fastest choice. Wide receivers may be the only players where a lightweight low-cut cleat is worth sacrificing some support to gain speed.
- Field Type:
You’ll be playing on either natural grass or turf fields (or both) and there are two types of football cleats: molded and detachable. Consider what types of fields you’ll most often be playing on when choosing your cleats. If you have games scheduled for both grass and turf or the conditions of your field will change during the season, you can’t go wrong with detachable cleats which are more versatile.
- Hard, dry turf: use molded cleats.
- Wet or muddy grassy: use long cleats to grab traction (1 inch+)
- Hard-packed, natural grass: use .5 inch cleats
- Dry, artificial grass: use cleats with numerous tiny nubs
