Achilles Tendonitis
• Achilles Tendonitis is inflammation and degeneration of the Achilles tendon which is the large tendon in the back of the ankle. It’s a common injury that results from overuse or injury.
• Symptoms to look for are a shooting pain, burning pain or even a really piercing pain in the area.
• Left untreated the injury can worsen or a complete rupture of the Achilles tendon can occur, which is very painful with a long recovery.
• The most common cause of Achilles tendonitis is overuse, but overpronation, poor shoe selection or lack of stretching before exercise can also cause it.
• Treat it early with rest, ice, compression and elevation to help fight the inflammation. Athletes might also want to try an orthotic called a heel cup or cradle for extra support.
