Athlete’s Foot
• Athlete’s Foot is a fungal infection of the skin that develops in the moist areas between the toes and other areas of the foot.
• Common symptoms include itching, stinging and burning between the toes/on soles of the feet. Also, peeling and cracking skin or peeling blisters.
• The fungus that causes athlete’s foot is very contagious and can be picked up from going barefoot in places like swimming pools, showers, bathrooms, saunas and fitness centers. It can also live in rugs, clothes, linens and footwear. The fungus can spread from skin to skin contact between people (or from wearing other people’s shoes).
• It thrives in moist, dark environments including those found in sweaty shoes and socks.
• Treatment includes bathing your foot everyday with soap and warm water, changing socks frequently and wearing socks that absorb moisture (like wool and cotton). Expose your feet to air for short periods during the day (but don’t walk barefoot) and wear sandals with open toes whenever possible. You may also need an over-the-counter product made to treat the athlete’s foot fungus. In severe cases a doctor can prescribe an oral medication.
• There are several ways to try and prevent from getting athlete’s foot. Wear sandals or shoes when walking on moist/wet floors. Don’t share shoes, socks or towels. Wear socks made of absorbent materials. Change socks frequently and wear breathable footwear.
