  • The perfect hiking boots will both comfortably fit your feet and work well with the types of hikes you typically take.
  • Your toes should have a little wiggle room; measure 1/8- ½ inches between your longest toes and the end of the shoe. Your heels should fit snugly and not slip out or up as you walk.
  • Light hiking shoes are great for day hiking and long distance hiking. They look like running shoes with a low-cut ankle and flexible midsole,
  • Hiking boots are perfect for day hikes or weekend backpacking trips with light loads. They are pretty flexible but not quite as sturdy or durable as backpacking boots.
  • Backpacking boots are good for carrying loads of varying weights on longer hiking trips. They offer a lot of support with stiffer midsoles.
  • Mountaineering boots give you the option to attach crampons for glacier trips. These are the toughest boots out there.
  • A waterproof boot will last through puddles and rain, but won’t let much air circulate – beware hot, sweaty, smelly feet. But you can and should apply a waterproofing treatment to any (non waterproof) hiking boot you buy.
